A short interview with Emma Cattapan from Rossmoyne Senior High School about the best (and worst) texts she's taught, and the benefits of getting authors in front of kids.
Emma Cattapan is the Head of English at Rossmoyne Senior High School and a voracious reader. Goodreads is her favourite app, and she loves all genres but especially speculative fiction. She loves reading to her students and enjoys igniting a love of books in her young charges.
What is the best text you've ever taught, and why?
This is to hard to answer because what works for one class may not for another, so it really depends! BUT, something that sticks in my mind, simply because the kids used to run to class to hear me read it was Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta. This was for a Year 11 General English class—kids who may not necessarily read independently or at all, so it was so wonderful to see them engaged.
