Road trips and school holidays, teenage dreams, romantasy, the em dash, messing with bookshop displays, what I'm currently reading, and a book that found me right when I needed it most.
Bored? Head to the library.
I’ll never forget during one of my first years working in schools, when I said to a mum at the last day pick up, “happy holidays!” and she replied, “yeah sure, it’s happy for you teachers, not happy for us parents!”
Ouch.
Now a little older and a mum myself, I empathise a little more with parents who need to keep their kids occupied during the break. But one great place to head? Your local library. I am probably preaching to the converted by putting this PSA in my newsletter, but I am always impressed by the quality and quantity of free school holiday programs at local libraries. And also how under-utilised they seem to be.
If you don’t believe me, head to the website of your local library and see what’s on. You may be surprised. At mine there is kite making, Easter craft, escape rooms, stop motion animation workshops, library mini golf, and more! All FREE. And without the uniquely appalling smell of a play centre.
